This policy explains what personal information We Repair Computers, Harwich collects, why we collect it, how we look after it and what your rights are. We keep it simple and only collect what we need to help you.
Who we are
We Repair Computers, Harwich is a computer, laptop, Mac, phone and games console repair shop at 16 Oakley Road, Harwich, Essex, CO12 4QZ. We are the “controller” of the personal information described here.
Questions about your information: email info@werepaircomputers-harwich.co.uk, call or WhatsApp 07773 886309, or visit us in the shop.
What we collect
- Contact form: your name, email address, phone number, the type of device and your message. If you tick the box, we also record that you agreed to receive our newsletter.
- Calls, WhatsApp and email: your contact details and whatever you tell us about your device or problem.
- Repairs: while we have your device, your name, phone number, the device and the fault, so we can keep you updated. We don’t keep these once your device has been collected, and we never store card or payment details.
- Website visits: technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit. This is used to keep the site secure and working and – only if you accept analytics cookies – to understand how visitors use the site (see “Cookies” below). We do not use advertising tracking.
Your data on devices you bring in
Phones, laptops and computers often hold personal files. We only access what we need to diagnose, repair and test your device. We do not copy, keep or share your files unless you ask us to – for example for data recovery or a data transfer – and any copy we make for that job is deleted once the work is finished and handed back. We recommend you back up your device before any repair.
How we use your information and why
- To answer your enquiry and give you a quote – because you asked us to (steps before a contract) and our legitimate interest in replying to customers.
- To carry out and guarantee your repair – to perform our contract with you.
- To send our newsletter – only with your consent. You can withdraw it at any time.
- To keep our business accounts – to meet our legal obligations (for example to HMRC). Our accounts record the repair and the amount, not your name or contact details.
- To keep the website secure and stop spam and attacks – our legitimate interest.
We never sell your information, and we do not use it for automated decisions about you.
Our newsletter
If you agree, we email you about every two weeks with repair tips, new guides and news from the shop. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, or you can simply email or call us and we will remove you straight away.
Who we share it with
We only share information with trusted services that help us run the business, and only what they need:
- Hostinger – hosts our website and our email.
- Google – stores our website backups (Google Drive), and provides the map on our contact page, website fonts and our Google reviews.
- Wordfence (Defiant Inc.) – website security; checks visitor IP addresses against known attackers.
- Trustindex – displays our Google reviews on the website.
- Google Analytics – only if you accept analytics cookies: tells us how many people visit, which pages they look at and how they found us. IP addresses are not stored, and we do not use it for advertising.
- Authorities – only where the law requires it.
Some of these companies may process information outside the UK (for example in the USA). When that happens, it is protected by UK-approved safeguards such as the UK–US data bridge or standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Enquiries (contact form, email, WhatsApp): up to 3 months. Messages sent through our website form are deleted automatically after 3 months.
- Repair details (your name, phone number and device): only while we have your device – removed once it has been collected. We don’t keep payment details.
- Newsletter list: until you unsubscribe.
- Website backups: the last 4 backups (about 8 weeks), then automatically replaced.
Cookies
Cookies are small files saved by your browser. We use:
- Essential cookies – needed for the website to work and stay secure, and to remember your cookie choice. These are always on.
- Analytics cookies (optional) – Google Analytics cookies (named _ga and _ga_…) that help us understand how the website is used, kept for up to 14 months. They are only set if you click “Accept all” on our cookie notice. We do not use advertising cookies.
- Third-party content – the Google map and Google reviews on some pages come from Google and Trustindex, which may set their own cookies.
You can change your choice at any time using the cookie settings link, or block and delete cookies in your browser settings.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask us to:
- give you a copy of the information we hold about you;
- correct anything that is wrong;
- delete your information (unless we must keep it by law);
- limit or object to how we use it, or move it to another provider;
- stop sending you marketing – at any time.
Just email info@werepaircomputers-harwich.co.uk or speak to us in the shop. We will reply within one month, free of charge.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113.
